Emily was first introduced to yoga by her chiropractor who suggested yoga as a way to manage lower back pain and stress. Emily immediately experienced relief of her back issues and felt the various physical benefits that yoga brought. Her stress level decreased and she experienced more balance in her life. That was twelve years ago.
Today, Emily practices yoga everyday. She has an affinity for Vinyasa and Yin Yoga and her personal practice consists of Vinyasa Yoga (fluid movement from one pose to another) to challenge her strength and flexibility with some Yin Yoga and restorative poses at the end to relax her mind and body.
As an instructor, Emily is fueled by her gratitude for the opportunity to guide others into their yoga practice, as well as the relationships formed with her students. Emily explains that:
“Yoga is important to our physical bodies in that it builds strength, flexibility, and balance. It also brings various benefits to our health, including detoxification, blood pressure regulation, hormone balance, and boosts immunity. Perhaps most important is the mind and body connection that fosters focus, mindfulness and meditation, which can decrease stress and increase emotional wellbeing.
Yoga helps people in personal ways. Some people come to yoga looking for physical benefits and within a few weeks of a regular practice, they find they’ve increased strength, flexibility and balance. I also hear from my students that yoga allows them to be more mindful and less reactive in their lives, and offers a level of relaxation that truly remedies their daily stress. Many also say that yoga helps them sleep more soundly and perform better in other physical activities.
Some assume that you must have a certain body type or physical ability to do yoga. Not so. Anyone can have a yoga practice. The key is to find the type of yoga that is better suited for you. Even so, poses may be modified as well. Anybody can practice yoga and benefit physically and emotionally from a regular practice.”
